Tab Symbols explained

Hammer on
If you buy a book of guitar tabs, or download some of the many tabs freely available on the internet, you may see many different symbols and markings along the tab.
Here is an explanation, with examples, of some that you are most likely to see:

h   = hammer on.

It would look something like this....

E---------------3h5-------------------
B-------------------------------------   Play example
G-------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------

This tells us to finger the third fret on string No.1 (thinnest string), play the note, and while still pressing on the 3rd fret, immediately press (or hammer) another finger onto the fifth fret, but without picking the string again with the right hand.

Don't worry if it doesn't work the first time you try it, or even the twentieth time. You will get there in the end. As in everything, nothing is worth achieving, if it doesn't require some effort and perseverence.
